The site of a former mortuary will soon have an afterlife: affordable housing.

Four years ago, the Rev. Mark Bentz and the members of St. Alice Catholic Church in Springfield realized they had a big problem.

“We were in a crisis both financially and spiritually,” said Bentz, who has served as pastor at St. Alice since 2016.

Membership was down, the parish was shortstaffed, and the church facilities had a lot of deferred maintenance.

Essex participated in the groundbreaking for Lane County’s new 26,000-SF Developmental Disabilities Services Facility.

The new building will be a welcoming and easy to navigate facility which will serve some of the most vulnerable people in our community. 

Essex General Construction really came through for us, knocking out wall segments faster than we could have possibly done on our own, and going out of their way to help with all kinds of extras along the way. They’ve been instrumental in the pursuit of a plan for replacing the shower trailer at the Reboot Station (a challenge that we continue to wrestle with—April showers would be so welcome, but that may be faster than even we can move).

When visitors, students, and performers walk through the doors of the new Midtown Arts Center for the first time next month, they’ll see big bright studios, convenient dressing rooms, large video screens, and a host of other amenities. Yet it’s what they won’t see that makes the seven-story building at 16th Avenue and Pearl streets in Eugene unique.

Building plans and floor plans are one thing — and to the credit of The Midtown mixed-used project development team in Eugene, there are a lot of these plans, both for the builders and contractors working on its arts-focused commercial arm and for those working on its 40 luxury residential condominiums.

When it's not safe for homeless people to gather in shelters to escape the cold, other solutions are needed. 

The recent tragedy in Minneapolis reminds us that our communities are scarred and in need of healing. The construction industry has a responsibility to respond in a productive way by demonstrating that it provides opportunities for everyone to advance, prosper and succeed. Now more than ever it is important that construction sites and offices across the country be welcoming and inclusive places to work. In that light, we urge our construction industry partners to take the Culture of CARE pledge and work with us to continue building an industry that is diverse, safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all.

As I look to the future, I have no immediate plans to retire. I enjoy the work I do and the people I work with. Construction is a great industry, and I’m very happy that I found Essex and my family here! Let’s continue to build stuff together!!

Tell me about your history working for Essex General Construction.

My career at Essex began 19 years ago when I was hired as a receptionist/administrative assistant. I was the first-person people saw when they visited our office and the first person they spoke to when they called. There were no direct dial numbers back then.

I’ve worked at Essex for 18 years but have worked with Essex’s President Jon Texter on and off since 1976.
