Sponsors breaks ground on new homes

A new housing program, designed by Nir Pearlson Architect and being constructed by Essex General Construction broke ground in West Eugene on Friday.
The non-profit, Sponsors, is set to start construction on 10 rental units for people who have been released from jail in Lane County.
The organization received several grants and donations. Recently, they received $200,000 from Lane County.
The mission of the organization is to give people a second chance and to help them get access to mental health and counseling services.
Paul Solomon, the executive director of Sponsors, said their goal is to help people transition back into society.
"This project is another illustration of what we can do to provide second chances to people who have made mistakes and are part of this community,” Solomon said. “They are people who are born and raised here and are coming back to this community post-incarceration. This is a way that we can help support them.”
The project will cost over $1 million. Officials expect to start construction in May, with people moving in by the end of the year.
Five duplexes and a community building will be sited on the corner of Elmira and Iowa streets, directly behind Sponsors' Roosevelt Crossing facility on Hwy 99.
